Love That I Smoke (A Sestina)

by Jenna Mia Strauchen

I hear you call to me, love
From behind layers of smoke
I don’t mind
But I won’t fly
Back to you this time - it’s too hard
When you can’t even look me in the eye

Though I won’t forget the color of your eyes
They are the color of a twisted love
The green of sour apples - too hard
To bite into without blood. I smoke
Til I think I can fly
Right out of this cage that was my mind

But I crash so hard
Am I just out of my mind?
All my dreams dissipate into smoke
You are the storm but I am the eye
Chaos feels like perfect love
When the earth quakes, I fly

When the skies fall down, I fly
And it’s not hard
When all you know is twisted love
Locked inside a twisted mind
Oh, I can’t even look you in the eye
I’ll stay shrouded in smoke

It’s all just mirrors and smoke
Someone’s always gotta fly
So let’s just close our eyes
And you can kiss me hard
I’ll keep my heart, but you can fill my mind
And we can call this love
